Father’s Day is a day to celebrate all fathers and the signifcant role that they play in a child’s life. However, Father’s Day was unique this year. 2,000 immigrant families have been reported to have been separated yesterday due to immigration laws being enforced. According to The Today show, the separation has been used as a way to pressure Democrats to side with President Trump as he enforces tougher immigration laws. Children have been snatched from their families and taken to detention facilities where they are being held until the next step has been taken on what to do next. The news has been devastating for many and there are riots outside of the camps to stand for justice and for children to be reunited with their families.

First Lady Melania Trump said that she, ” hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finallly come together to achieve successful immigration reform.” She believes that, “we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.”

Laura Bush also took a stand in being a spokesperson on the incident stating, ” I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral and it breaks my heart.”

There will be updates as the president meets with two Republican Senators on the next steps following this policy and immigration funding. President Trump mentioned in interviews that he is not happy about children being separated from their families and that, ” the Democrats have to change their law. This is their law.”
